Akiko Dōmoto

Akiko Domoto (堂 本 暁 子jap, Akiko Domoto, born July 31, 1932 in California ) was from 2001 to 2009 non-party governor of the Japanese prefecture of Chiba.

Domoto studied until 1959 at the Tōkyō Joshi Daigaku, then worked for the television station TBS. For her documentary Babyhotel she received several awards in 1980. In 1989 she was elected for the Socialist Party of Japan into Sangiin. Later she joined the New Party Sakigake. From 1994 to 2000, she represented the Japanese government at the World Conservation Union, from 1997 as deputy chairman.

2001 Domoto ran successfully as independents in the gubernatorial election in Chiba. She was the nation's only the third woman in the governorship after Fusae Ōta ( Osaka, 2000-2008 ) and Yoshiko Shiotani ( Kumamoto, 2000-2008 ). In her re-election in 2005 Domoto was supported by the DPJ, the Kōmeitō, the SDP and the citizen network Chiba.

In the gubernatorial election on 29 March 2009 Domoto did not run for a third term. Her successor was Kensaku Morita.
