Alan Fletcher (graphic designer)

Alan Fletcher ( born September 27, 1931 in Nairobi, Kenya, † September 21, 2006 in East Sussex ) was a British graphic designer.

Fletcher studied at the Central School of Art and Design and the Royal College of Art in London and in 1956 Paul Rand, Herbert Matter and Josef Albers at Yale. In Los Angeles, he worked for Saul Bass. In 1962 he was co-founder of the design studio Fletcher / Forbes / Gill. In the 1970s he founded together with Theo Crosby, Colin Forbes, Kenneth Grange, Mervyn Kurlansky in London design studio Pentagram, one of the world's most prestigious design studios. From 1993, Fletcher was Art Director at Phaidon Press.

Fletcher is considered one of the definitive British designers and typographers of the 20th century.

He has published numerous books, including the design classic The Art of Looking Sideways ( 2001).
