Alanus de Rupe

Alanus de Rupe ( Latinized from Alain de la Roche, also Alanus van der clip, * 1428, probably in Brittany; † to the September 8, 1475 in Zwolle ) was a Dominican and gave impetus to the rise of the Rosary devotion in end of the 15th century.

Life

Alanus joined the Dominican monastery in Dinan at and studied and taught at the Sorbonne in Paris. In 1462 he was, together with another member of the Reform monastery in Lille.

1464 had Alanus a Marian vision that led him to write the Marienpsalter, a consideration of the Rosary, and to establish the first Rosary Confraternity, which he called Confratria Psalterii DN Mariae Virginis et Jesus Christ. Its members committed themselves to pray a Hail Mary Psalter of 150 and 15 Paternoster within a week.

After working in Douai and Ghent came Alanus 1470 at the University of Rostock, where he earned his master's degree.

Because Alanus suggestions that he had of the Carthusian Dominic of Prussia, attributed to Saint Dominic and his pathological personality he was not without controversy. In year of his death he wrote an apology ( apologia ) whose authenticity is well established, while the authorship of other works attributed to him remains uncertain. However, its impact was considerable: the Rosary confraternities shaped the religious life in the cities until the Reformation. On Alanus the legend goes back, Mary herself had Saint Dominic the rosary presented, which was to the 20th century further passed on and often depicted.

He is among the authors who have experienced a wide distribution in the incunabula time of printing. The Marienpsalter was printed for the first time in 1480 in Utrecht in Dutch and since 1483 in Ulm, 1491 in Nuremberg, published from 1492 onwards in Augsburg.

Alanus was religious writers since the 17th century as Seliger, even if an official beatification can not be established; his memory was celebrated on September 8.
