Albin Dunajewski

Albin, Cardinal Dunajewski ( born March 1, 1817 in Stanislav, Galicia, † June 18, 1894 in Kraków) was a Roman Catholic prince-bishop of Krakow.

As a young student was Dunajewski part of the "Polish democrats" and then arrested. He was suspected of conspiracy and sentenced to death in 1841. The penalty was converted in 1845 to 8 years imprisonment and finally shortened so that it was released in 1848. Dunajewski was ordained priest on 28 July 1861. On May 15, 1879 he was appointed Bishop of Krakow. He was consecrated on June 18, 1879 by the Apostolic Nuncio in Austria Lodovico Jacobini, Pope Leo XIII. created him cardinal on 23 June 1890 and elevated him to cardinal priest with the titular church of Santi Vitale, Valeria, Gervasio e Protasio. In the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria he possessed as bishop of Cracow on a Virilstimme in the Galician parliament.
