Aldeia de Paio Pires is a Portuguese parish ( freguesia ) with 13,342 inhabitants (as of 30 June 2011). It belongs to the city Seixal and is therefore at the Lisbon opposite, southern shore of the estuary of the Tagus ( Margem Sul do Tejo ). The community area is 16 km ².

History

The town has existed since the year 1564. 1803 Paio Pires was a separate municipality. After the Liberal Revolution in 1822 and the following Miguelistenkrieg 1836 Circle of Seixal was created after some lead then to the community Paio Pires administratively belonged since 1835.

The establishment of small industrial enterprises in particular from 1881 took the place some development. With the increased industrialization of the circle Seixal, in particular the opening of the steel plant Siderurgia Nacional 1961, also Paio Pires continued to grow.

Place name

Aldeia de Paio Pires ( Portuguese for: Village of Paio Pires ) refers to Paio Peres Correia. He was Grand Master of the Order of Santiago, who owned the local area. In the village a statue for the namesake is located.

The place is often simply called Paio Pires.
