History

The original Aldgate East station was opened on 6 October 1884 as part of a common path of the Metropolitan Railway (now the Metropolitan Line) and the Metropolitan District Railway (now the District Line ) from the inner ring road to Whitechapel. The station building at that time was about a hundred meters to the west, close to station Aldgate. The connecting curve between Liverpool Street and Aldgate East fell from unusually narrow, and more often led to capacity constraints over the years.

After more than 50 years we enlarged the track at Aldgate Triangle, creating a far less tight curve was created. The old station was closed on 30 October 1938 and replaced by a new building on the present site; thus, the use of longer trains was possible. St Mary's ( Whitechapel Road), the next following station towards the east, was now too close to Aldgate East and had to be closed. As compensation was at the eastern end of the platform from Aldgate East, an additional output.

The new station is located entirely underground and also serves as a pedestrian underpass under the much traveled Whitechapel High Street. In order to create the necessary space for this, the tracks had to be reduced by more than two feet in running train operation. For this purpose we first removed the gravel and put the tracks on wooden struts. Then lowered over 100 workers simultaneously with the help of hooks the tracks. These hooks are still present today.
