Alex Baumann

Alexander "Alex" Baumann, OC, O.Ont (* April 21, 1964 in Prague) is a former Canadian swimmer with Czechoslovakian ancestry.

Born in Czechoslovakia, his parents emigrated with him in connection with the crushing of the Prague Spring in 1973 to Canada. At age nine, Alex Baumann got regular swimming lessons. In 1981 Baumann held 38 Canadian swimming records and won at the Commonwealth Games gold medals than 200 m and 400 m medley. His sporting highlight, he experienced in the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles when he was both capable of stretching in world record time Olympic champion. These were the first Olympic gold medal for Canada since 1912. In 1987, he ended his career.

In 1992 he was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the international swimming sport.
