Alexander, Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg

Duke Alexander of Schleswig -Holstein -Sonderburg ( born January 20, 1573 Sønderborg, † March 13, 1627 ) was a member of the branch line Schleswig-Holstein -Sonderburg out of the house of Oldenburg.

Life

Alexander was the third son of Duke John III. of Schleswig -Holstein -Sonderburg (1545-1622) and his first wife Princess Elisabeth of Brunswick- Grubenhagen (1550-1586), daughter of Duke Ernst II and Princess Anne Margaret of Pomerania -Stettin. His paternal grandfather was the Danish- Norwegian king Christian III. In the vicinity of wages he earned, which belongs to the diocese of Minden Well House Beck.

After his death the duchy was divided among his married sons and created additional side lines of the House of Schleswig -Holstein -Sonderburg.

Progeny

On November 26, 1604 married Duke Alexander in Black Castle Princess Dorothea of Schwarzburg- Sondershausen ( 1579-1639 ), daughter of Count Johann Günther I. and Anna von Oldenburg. From the marriage ten children were born:

  • Alexander Henry (1608-1667) ∞ 1643 Dorothea Maria Heshus ( morganatic ), founded the so-called Catholic line
  • Ernst Günther (1609-1689), Duke of Schleswig -Holstein -Sonderburg- Augustenburg ∞ 1651 Princess Augusta of Schleswig -Holstein -Sonderburg- Glücksburg ( 1633-1701 )
