Alexander Fritz

Biography

Fritz was the son of a pastor. In Giessen, he studied law, after which he worked as a lawyer in Gernsheim and Darmstadt, most recently as a Privy Councillor in Alsfeld.

Chess Master

For professional reasons, Fritz took quite rare part in chess tournaments. His first major tournament he played in 1877 in Leipzig, where he competed in the main tournament. In 1878 he shared in Frankfurt am Main in the Master Tournament with Wilfried Paulsen fifth place. Other tournaments he played in 1880 in Wiesbaden, Germany ( 13th), the same year in Braunschweig ( 9th place) and the German Championships 1883 in Nuremberg, 1887 in Frankfurt, 1889 in Breslau, 1898 in Cologne, 1908 in Dusseldorf, where he strongly to the players of his time met. He won, for example, in 1883 and 1908 against Schallopp against Lousy.

According to him, a variant of the Two Knights game is named in Nachzuge: After the trains 1.e2 -e4 e7 - e5 -f3 2.Sg1 Sb8 - c6 - c4 3.Lf1 Ng8 - f6 4.Nf3 g5 - d7 -d5 is 5.e4xd5 now initiated the Fritz variation with 5 ... Nc6 -d4.

He often played the supporting program of tournaments simultaneously blind, mostly against ten opponents, even he occasionally entertained at parties guests with vocal performances.

Organizer

Together with his friend, the Erfurt city council Fritz Riemann, he supported the German chess. For this he was named in 1927 in Magdeburg at the national assembly Walter Robinow honorary member of the German Chess Federation.
