Alexander Leslie-Melville, 14th Earl of Leven

Alexander " Sandy" Robert Leslie - Melville, 14th Earl of Leven, 13th Earl of Melville ( born May 13, 1924 in London, † 7 April, 2012 Glenferness, Nairn ) was a Scottish peer, landowner and soldier.

Life and career

Leslie - Melville was born on 13 May 1924 as the son of Archibald Leslie - Melville, 13th Earl of Leven and Lady Rosamond Foljambe († 1974). His family is one of the oldest in Scotland. He attended Eton College, which he left in 1942 to become a member of the Coldstream Guards.

There he became a captain. He fought in the Second World War and was wounded. He was taken to Raigmore Hospital, but later returned to active service zuürck. Leslie - Melville still served in Germany and Tripoli. In the rank of captain, he finished his tour of duty in 1952, most recently as 1951 to 1952 he was aide- de-camp of the Governor-General of New Zealand.

From 1961 to 1969 he was Deputy Lieutenant of Nairn, and Lord Lieutenant von 1969 to 1999. From 1970 to 1974 he was Chairman ( Chairman ) of Nairn County Council. The British Ski and Snowboard Federation ( BSSF ) Leslie - Melville was 1981-1985 president.

In the 1960s he was also a member of the Management Committee of the Cairngorm Recreation Trust, as well as in the 1970 Chairman of the Cairngorm Winter Sports Development Trust. Until 1989 he was Chair of Governors of the Gordonstoun School.

He campaigned for winter sports in the Cairngorms and devoted himself to the family estate in Glenferness. This is close to Nairn, where he more than 30 years bekleidetete the position of a Queen's Representative.

Membership in the House of Lords

After the death of his father in 1947 he inherited the title of Earl of Leven and became a member of the House of Lords. There he sat as a non-party.

Family

Leslie - Melville married on April 30, 1953 Susan Steuart - Menzies, daughter of Lt Col Ronald Steuart - Menzies from Culdares. Together they have three children, two sons and a daughter.

They moved to Old Spey Bridge, Grantown after the older son had taken over the management of the family seat in the 1990s.

The title was inherited by his grandson as Ian Alexander Leslie - Melville, 15th Earl of Leven (* 1984), after the son died in 2007.
