Alexander Zhukov

Alexander Dmitrievich Zhukov (Russian: Александр Дмитриевич Жуков; born June 1, 1956 in Moscow ) is a Russian politician and economist. He is a State Duma deputy and first deputy chairman of the Duma. Since May 2010 he has also been President of the National Olympic Committee of Russia.

Biography

Zhukov visited the Middle School 444 in Moscow and graduated to 1978 to study economics at Moscow State University. Subsequently, he worked in the Ministry of Finance of the Soviet Union. In 1991, he completed a year of study in the U.S. at Harvard University.

From 1993 to 2004 he was a deputy of the Russian State Duma. He was director of tax and budget committee and at times first deputy chairman of the Duma.

In the period from 1998 to 2003 he was a member of the Supervisory Board of Sberbank and a member of the Economic Council of the Russian government.

In March 2004 Zhukov was appointed deputy prime minister in this role he was also responsible for the implementation of the National Programme projects in Russia. He also holds the post of Chairman of the Board of Directors of Russian Railways ( RZD) and is also board member of the ruling party, United Russia. In December 2011, Zhukov was elected as a deputy in the Duma elections and resigned as Deputy Prime Minister down. On 21 December 2011, he was elected first deputy chairman of the Duma.

Zhukov was between 2003 and 2009 President of the Russian Chess Federation and sat down in this capacity for the introduction of chess as an Olympic discipline.

In May 2010, he was elected president of the Russian National Olympic Committee. His predecessor Leonid Tjagatschjow had resigned after the disappointing performance of Russia in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

Zhukov is married and has a son.
