Alfredo Chaves is a Brazilian municipality and small town in the state of Espírito Santo, about 60 km south-west of the state capital of Vitória in the interior. Alfredo Chaves has 13,955 inhabitants ( as of 2010) and an area of ​​615.791 km ².

Geography

Alfredo Chaves is located in the southwest of the state. The municipality is crossed by hills. The highest peak is Trancenco peak with 1,050 meters above sea level. The center of Alfredo Chaves is located only 10 m above sea level.

History

The town was founded by Italian immigrants and was originally called Alto Benevente. Later the town was named in honor of the engineer and Minister for colonization Alfredo Rodrigues Fernandes Chaves. Dom Pedro II had the Minister sent to the region to protect the settlers against Indian attacks.

Economy

Livestock is the main industry, especially dairy cows and chickens are bred. This also still play coffee and banana plantations play an important role.
