Allison Miller (drummer)

Allison Miller ( born 1974 or 1975 in Brooklyn ) is an American jazz musician ( drums, percussion, djembe ) and composer who is active in the City music scene of New York.

Life and work

Miller grew up in the Washington, D.C. and began with seven years playing the piano before switching to drums with ten. She had in her school days in the swing and big band drummer Walter Salb lessons; then she studied at West Virginia University percussion. After moving to New York City, she continued her studies with Michael Carvin and Lenny White. Since the 1990s, she worked in the field of folk and jazz, inter alia, with Ani DiFranco, Natalie Merchant, the Indigo Girls, Marty Ehrlich, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Mike Stern and Brandie Carlile. On behalf of the State Department, she toured in Africa and Asia. In 2004, she presented the debut album 5am stroll. End of the decade she established the formation Allison Miller's Boom Tic Boom, with bassist Todd Sickafoose, pianist Myra Melford and violinist Jenny Scheinman; with this band, it was celebrated in 2011 at the Jazz Festival Willisau. More band projects are EMMA with singer / songwriter Erin McKeown, TILT with Taylor Eigsti and bassist Jon Evans and Agrazing Maze, with Ingrid Jensen, Enrique Haneine and Carlo DeRosa. In the field of jazz, she participated 1995-2012 in 41 recording sessions, including with Jessica Lurie. In Kritikerpoll the downbeat it was listed in the category Rising Star in 2005 and 2010.
