Aloísio Lorscheider

Aloisio Cardinal Leo Arlindo Lorscheider OFM ( born October 8, 1924 in Estrela, Brazil, † December 23, 2007 in Porto Alegre) was Archbishop of Aparecida.

Life

Aloisio Lorscheider, son of German immigrants Joseph and Veronica Lorscheider, joined with nine years in the seminary of the Franciscans of Taquari, where he received his education. He then moved to Divinópolis, where he studied philosophy and Catholic theology. On 1 December 1942 he was admitted as a novice of the Franciscans, on 22 August 1946 he made ​​his solemn profession. On August 22, 1948, he received the sacrament of Holy Orders.

Lorscheider then taught for two years of mathematics, German and Latin at the Seminary of Taquiri before his superior in Rome at the Pontifical University Antonianum ( Pontifical Ateneo Antonianum ) sent him, where he in 1952 received his doctorate in Catholic theology. After his return to Brazil Lorscheider taught until 1958 at the Seminar of Franciscans in Divinópolis and has published numerous essays and technical papers. From 1958 to 1962 he was then lecturer at the Pontifical University Antonianum in Rome. During this time he also took over the management of several Catholic youth associations.

In 1962 he was called by Pope John XXIII. appointed bishop of the Diocese of Santo Ângelo in the southernmost Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. Lorscheider was known for his great pastoral commitment and high theological education, with which he gained a great reputation within the Brazilian Bishops' Conference, which he eventually headed from 1971 to 1979. From 1973 to 1979 he was also president of the Latin American Bishops' Conference CELAM and 1975/75 president of Caritas International.

At the age of 70 years he was in 1995 appointed Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Aparecida in the state of São Paulo, the most important place of pilgrimage in Brazil. 2004 his resignation was accepted by Pope John Paul II. On 23 December 2007, he died after a long illness age of 83 in Porto Alegre.

His cousin was José Ivo Lorscheiter (1927-2007), Bishop of Santa Maria 1974 to 2004.

Work

Lorscheider was liberation theologian and was designated because of its social commitment as " archbishop of the poor and disenfranchised ." During the Council, he was one of the first signatories of the Katakombenpakts. The commitment to social engagement and commitment to human rights he derived from the Christian faith.
