Geography

Old fence at the edge of the Altmark is located on reclaimed ( and flood-prone ) west bank of the Elbe, about 20 km northeast of Stendal. Just north of the wetland Wipe connects. In the north of the district Altenzaun greed cable ferry crosses Sandau at Elbe - river kilometer 416.2 of the current and provides the connection to the right bank to Sandau and Havelberg ago. History

Founded in 1236 as Odentunnen village Altenzaun is one of the oldest villages of Altmark pile. To the owners of goods in and around the Old fence belonged Count Siegfried of Osterburg and the Abbot Gerhard of Verden and Helmstedt.

On 26 October 1806, the Battle of Old fence between Colonel Yorck von Wartenberg and Napoleon's troops took place here that could decide Yorck for themselves. As part of the village festival 2006 200 years earlier events was thought.
