Amar Kanwar

Amar Kanwar (Hindi: अमर कंवर; born 1964 in New Delhi ) is an Indian documentary filmmaker and artist. By means of documentary and video installation he talks about topics of the contemporary history of the Indian subcontinent. He was particularly devoted to the Indo- Pakistani wars due to the partition of India after independence. Work of Kanwar were shown on three documenta exhibitions.

Life

Amar Kanwar began in the mid 1980s to make documentaries. The impetus for it gave the massacre of Sikhs as a result of the assassination of Indira Gandhi on 31 October 1984 and the Bhopal disaster in December of the same year. Kanwar's film A Season Outside (1998) refers to these two events.

To date, Amar Kanwar has realized more than 40 films and video installations. His films have been awarded, among others, on the film festivals in San Francisco ( Golden Gate Award ), Mumbai ( Golden Conch ) and Turin ( 1st prize). Kanwar was in 2005 with the inaugural recipient of Edvard Munch Award for Contemporary Art Award, which is awarded by a foundation of the Norwegian Ministry of Culture. Kanwar lives and works in New Delhi.

  • 2008: Amar Kanwar - The Torn First Pages, the Haus der Kunst, Munich. The trilogy was also shown at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and 's- Hertogenbosch.
  • 2007: Whitechapel Laboratory - Amar Kanwar, Whitechapel Art Gallery, London. On display was the trilogy A Season Outside, To Remember and A Night of Prophecy.
  • 2006: Trilogy: Amar Kanwar, Kunstindustrimuseet Oslo. On display were the works A Season Outside (1998 ), A Night of Prophecy (2002) and To Remember ( 2003).
  • 2003: Amar Kanwar - Of Poems and Prophesies, Renaissance Society, Chicago. On display were three works: A Season Outside (1998 ), A Night of Prophecy (2002) and The 30th of January ( 2003).
