American Ornithologists' Union

The American Ornithologists ' Union ( AOU ) is the largest and most prestigious ornithological association of the New World.

Foundation

On September 26, 1883, the ornithologist Joel Asaph Allen, William Brewster ( 1851-1919 ) and Elliott Coues met at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City in order to ' call an organization modeled after the British Ornithologists' Union to life. At the foundation participated 23 renowned ornithologist who later President of the AOU were.

Others

Since January 1884 The AUK, the quarterly journal of the American Ornithologists ' Union appears. The logo shows the extinct Great Auk. 1886, the official Committee North American Check -list Committee ( NACC ) was established, whose purpose is to provide a nomenclature that can keep up with the changes in the systematics and distribution of the North and Central American birds step. This nomenclature is listed in the publication " Check -list of North American Birds ." Another committee is the South American Check -list Committee ( SACC ), who developed an English-language nomenclature for South American Vogeltaxa.

The aim of the AOU is the promotion of ornithological science through annual conferences, membership, committees and publications. The members are divided into different classes. In addition to the normal membership, there are the voting members and supporters. The highest class is a member of the Fellow. With this honor, members are honored with the outstanding merits. Currently, the AOU has 4,000 members.
