The present town was founded during the colonization policy at the end of the Portuguese Reconquista, when the young Kingdom of Portugal declined much of the Alentejo the Moors. The area was about 1194 to the Hospitallers, who founded various places in the region. Amieira received first town rights in 1256th It was a Vila and the seat of its own circle. During the course of administrative reform by the Liberal Revolution in 1822 the district mid-19th century was dissolved and annexed as a simple community among Nisa. In contrast to a number of other Portuguese places with names Amieira the place leads since 1957 officially the addition do Tejo, referring to the proximity to the river Tagus.
