Amphictyon

Amphictyon (Greek Ἀμφικτύων ) was King in Attica. He was, according to Greek mythology, the son of Deucalion and Pyrrha, the. His siblings were Hellen and Protogeneia.

Amphictyon married a daughter of Pedias and Kranaos, king of Attica. After nine years of rule Amphictyon overthrew his father and ascended the throne himself. His reign lasted twelve years to he was again expelled by Erichthonius.

Amphictyon is the introduction of the cult of Dionysus in Attica and the associated custom always to mix wine with water, attributed. In honor of this fact, there was in Athens a group of figures that showed Amphictyon while hosting of Dionysus and other gods.

Amphictyon shall convene the first in Anthele a gathering of the neighboring tribes ( Delphic pyläische amphictyony ). These meetings are called after him as amphictyonies. In Anthele therefore was erected next to the sanctuary of Demeter Amphiktyonis a temple for Amphictyon.
