Amsonia

Amsonia tabernaemontana

The Amsonien ( Amsonia ) are a genus of the family of the dogbane family ( Apocynaceae ). The genus was named in honor of the American botanist Charles Amson.

Features

The species are annual or perennial herbaceous plants. They grow upright, are reaching a meter high and do not form spurs. They make milk juice. The leaves are alternate.

The inflorescences are thyrsenartige or umbrella-shaped Zyme. They are terminal. The flowers are blue or bluish. The sepals are narrow pointed, and usually drüsenlos. The flowers are stem plate flowers. The corolla tube is cylindrical, extended over the center and inside is shaggy. The corolla lobes overlapping to the left. The stamens are recognized in the extended part of the corolla tube. The anthers are ovate to oblong, and free from the scar. The carpels are connected by the thread-like stylus. The ovules are numerous. The scar has a basal membranous attachment.

The seeds are cylindrical.

Dissemination

The species are native to North America and Southeast Asia.

System

The genus is found mostly in the tribe Vinceae within the subfamily Rauvolfioideae. Gene sequences not confirm this arrangement, however.
