Andreas Frühwirth

Andreas Franz Cardinal Frühwirth OP ( born August 21, 1845 in Sankt Anna am Aigen, Austria, † February 9, 1933 in Rome ) was a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

Andreas Franz Frühwirth, whose baptismal name was Francis, entered the Dominican Order on 13 September 1863. On 5 July 1868, he was ordained a priest in Graz. He studied in various Dominican houses Catholic theology and philosophy, and later he studied at the Pontifical Academy of St.. Thomas Aquinas.

He taught from 1871 to 1876 in the religious house in Graz and from 1885 to 1890 in Vienna. From 1890 on, he was Provincial of the Austro-Hungarian province of the order. In 1891 he became General Master of the whole Order. In this role he was also consultant to the Holy Office. On 26 October 1907 he was appointed by Pope Pius X to the Apostolic Visitor of Austria and Apostolic Nuncio in Bavaria. On November 30, 1907 he was ordained Titular Bishop of Heraclea in Europe. Frühwirth was by Pope Benedict XV. appointed on December 6, 1915 cardinal priest with the pro hac vice levied for the titular church of Santi Cosma e Damiano title diakonia. Since 1917 he lived in Rome and took part in the conclave of 1922 part, which Pope Pius XI. chose.

He was appointed Kardinalgroßpönitentiar on 8 January 1925 and held that post until December 9, 1927. Pope Pius XI. appointed him Chancellor of the Holy Roman Church and cardinal priest with the titular church of San Lorenzo in Damaso. He died in 1933 in Rome as a senior member of the College of Cardinals.
