Andrzej Ehrenfeucht

Andrzej Ehrenfeucht ( born August 8, 1932 in Vilnius ) is a Polish- American mathematician and computer scientist ( Mathematical logic, bioinformatics ).

Life and work

Ehrenfeucht studied mathematics at the University of Warsaw and was awarded his doctorate with Andrzej Mostowski at the Institute of Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Since 1972 he has been at the University of Colorado at Boulder, where he is a professor of computer science and Distinguished Professor of the University.

Ehrenfeucht dealt with mathematical logic and model theory. Here it is for the technique of Ehrenfeucht - Fraisse games are known ( with the Frenchman Roland Fraisse from his dissertation 1950), which allows the equivalence or non - equivalence of structures in the model theory to show it.

After Ehrenfeucht and Jan Mycielski the Ehrenfeucht - Mycielski sequence is named, a binary sequence with pseudo-random properties.

He later discusses in particular bioinformatics, in particular with the question of information processing in the living cell, where he conducts research on a broad interdisciplinary basis. He also deals with the mathematics education ( continuing education of mathematics teachers ).

In 2002, he received the Faculty Research Award from the University of Colorado ( College of Engineering and Applied Science) and 2005 Boulder Faculty Assembly Award. He is a member of the Academia Europaea.

His doctoral include bioinformaticians Eugene Myers and David Haussler.

He is with Ina Tarski, daughter of Alfred Tarski married.
