Political career

In the Scottish Parliament elections in 1999 Kerr stood as Labour candidate for the constituency of East Kilbride. Well ahead of the SNP candidate, Linda Fabiani, he won the mandate and moved into the newly created Scottish Parliament. In the following elections in 2003 and 2007, he defended his position. The 2011 parliamentary elections brought a change of deputies from East Kilbride, because Linda Fabiani succeeded for the first time to win the constituency for their party.

Between November 2001 and October 2004, Kerr was Scottish finance minister and then to 2007, Minister of Health. 2006 Kerr was chosen for his commitment to the introduction of the smoking ban in public buildings for Politician of the Year. In the shadow cabinet of the Labour Party, which was re-formed after the general election defeat, Kerr is provided as a finance and economy minister.
