Andy McGhee

Andrew "Andy" McGhee ( born November 3, 1927 in Wilmington (North Carolina)) is a jazz tenor saxophonist, author and university professor.

McGhee graduated in 1949 at the New England Conservatory and worked briefly with Roy Eldridge and the Boston Musicians Fat Man Robinson. From 1957 to 1963 he was a member of the Lionel Hampton band, with whom he went on tour through the United States, Europe and the Far East. His composition " McGhee " was recorded at Hampton on the album The Many Sides of Lionel Hampton. Then McGhee worked from 1963 to 1966 with Woody Herman, on his album Woody's Winners ( 1965) he is heard. He then became an instructor at the Berklee College of Music. To McGhees students count among others Bill Pierce, Javon Jackson, Michael Hashim, Donald Harrison, Antonio Hart, Sam Newsome, Richie Cole, Greg Osby, Ralph Moore, Carlo and Giorgio Schöb Visibelli. In addition to his teaching, he wrote several textbooks such as Improvisation for Saxophone: The Scale / Mode Approach and Modal Strategies for Saxophone.
