Sam Newsome

Sam Newsome ( born April 28, 1965 in Salisbury, Virginia ) is an American jazz saxophonist.

Newsome grew up in Hampton, Virginia, and began at the age of fifteen years, with musicians such as James Genus, Steve Wilson and Billy Drummond to work. After graduating from high school he attended from 1983, the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he studied saxophone with Billy Pierce, Andy McGhee and George Garzone and Hal Crook composition with Fred Lipsius and Herb Pomeroy. From this period his relations with musicians such as Danilo Perez, Javon Jackson, Cyrus Chestnut, Mark Whitfield, Antonio Hart and Mark Turner.

After graduating Newsome toured in summer 1988 with the quintet of Donald Byrd ( with Donald Brown, Ron McWhorter and Billy Kilson ) by the U.S. and Europe. The following year he went to New York where he played with Donald Harrison, Roy Haynes, Mark Whitfield and James Genus. In an appearance with Justin Robinson at the Blue Note Jazz Club Terence Blanchard became aware of him whose band he belonged to five years. During this time, he worked on three albums and several film soundtracks.

In 1996, Newsome, the band Global Unity, which was comprised of singer Elisabeth Kontomanou, the oud player Amos Hoffman, guitarist Marvin Sewell, pianist Jean -Michel Pilc, bassist Ugonna Okegwo and percussionist Gilad and Satoshi Takeishi, and with whom he recorded two albums recorded.

Since 2007, Newsome works on behalf of Jerome Composers Commissioning Program ( JCCP ) and the New York State Council for the Arts ( NYSCA ) to solo compositions for saxophone.
