Hal Crook

Hal Crook ( born 1950 ) is an American jazz trombonist.

Life and work

Crook had classical piano lessons as a child. Until 1971 he studied at the Berklee College of Music. He then taught contemporary music at Rhode Iceland School of Music and founded in 1976 with the drummer Artie Cabral Rhode Iceland School of Performing Music. He gave courses at the University of Rhode Iceland and taught at the University of California at Los Angeles and San Diego.

In 1982, Crook (later Jazz School ), where he taught San Diego School of Performing Music until 1986. Then he became a professor at Berklee College, where he teaches, among other arrangement, composition, improvisation and ensemble playing. Between 1998 and 2005 he was also a Visiting Artist in Residence at the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz. He published several textbooks on jazz improvisation and played several instructional CDs.

Crook composed and arranged for, inter alia, Phil Woods, Clark Terry, Herb Pomeroy, Louis Bellson, Artie Shaw, Duke Belaire, Dick Johnson and Nick Brignola and written composition collections for jazz ensembles, a selection was published under the title The Music of Hal Crook - 35 Jazz Originals.

He was a member of the Phil Woods Quintet and has performed with musicians such as Jerry Bergonzi, George Cables, Joe Diorio, Bill Dobbins, Joe Farrell, George Garzone, Mick Goodrick, Tom Harrell, Woody Herman, John Hicks, Milton Hinton, Thad Jones, Paul Motian, Adam Nussbaum, Lew Tabackin, Clark Terry, Bob Brookmeyer, Daniel Humair and John Medeski on. As a band leader and a sideman, he recorded more than forty albums. With its own belt order ( with Bob Gullotti, Leo Genovese and Dave Zinno ) he stepped 1994-2008 weekly in Providence (Rhode Iceland ).
