Àngel Guimerà

Ángel Guimerà, actually i Ángel Guimerà Jorge, ( born May 6, 1845 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Tenerife, † July 18, 1924 in Barcelona) was a Spanish writer who wrote in Catalan.

Guimerà came to the Canary Islands to the world; his father was a Catalan, his mother a local woman. Already in his early childhood he moved with his family to the mainland and settled in El Vendrell ( Tarragona ), the hometown of his father.

Later Guimerà moved to Barcelona and stayed there all his life. He died nine weeks after his 79th birthday on 18 July 1924, received at the request of King Alfonso XIII. a state funeral.

Reception

Was guimerà - Narcis Oller and next Jacint Verdaguer - an important representative of Renaixença; especially for the Spanish theater, he created a number of important works.

His work Terra baixa served as a literary model for Eugen d' Albert Opera lowlands and his story La filla del mar put the same composer 's opera love chains based.

Honors

The Teatro Guimerá in Santa Cruz de Tenerife wears his honor that name.
