Angela Voigt

Angela Voigt, née Schmalfeld ( born May 18, 1951 in Weferlingen, † April 11, 2013 in Magdeburg ) was a German athlete who had - starting for the GDR - at the Olympic Games in 1976 won the gold medal in the long jump.

Life

Angela Voigt was pentathlete at the beginning of their careers. In 1973, she was second in the GDR championships, but changed the face frequent injuries to the long jump. At the European Indoor Championships in 1974, she won the silver medal. At the European Championships in the summer, it was with 6.56 m fourth.

In the Olympic season 1976 they improved in January the indoor world record of 6.76 m. At the European Indoor Championships shortly thereafter, she finished fourth. In the outdoor season, she was briefly owned the world record (6.92 m) and in Montreal was then Olympic champion. ( 6.72 m- invalid -6 ,50-6 ,53- invalid -6, 57). The relatively small victories width can be explained by the then competition mode. Preliminaries (qualification ) and the final battle ( final ) were held on the same day.

In 1977 she became the mother of a son. At the European Championships in 1978 she finished second (invalid -6 ,48-6 ,66-6 ,55-6 ,33-6, 79 m). In 1982, she retired from active competition in 1984 and brought a second son.

Angela Voigt started for the SC Magdeburg and coached at Willi Olfert. In your race time it was 1.71 m tall and weighed 63 kg. In the becoming public knowledge after the fall of documents to the state doping in the GDR was found in the doped athletes also the name of Voigt.

The trained Fernmeldemechanikerin and graduate sports teacher was managing director of a sports club and a social worker in Haldensleben (Saxony- Anhalt) after the end of their sports career. In 1976, she was honored for her Olympic victory in Montreal with the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver.

Voigt died on 11 April 2013 by she is survived by her husband and two sons.
