Anselmo López (basketball)

Anselmo López Martín ( born May 5, 1910 in Velayos, Ávila province, † December 14, 2004 in Madrid) was a Spanish basketball player, coach and sports official. Along side Raimundo Saporta and Ernesto Segura de Luna as one of the principal officials and sponsors in the development of basketball in Spain.

Career

Anselmo López played in the 1930s in the basketball section of Espanyol, from there he joined the coaching staff of the Catalans. In 1941, coached by his team won by a 35:24 in the final against CB L' Hospitalet Spanish Cup, at that time the most important competition in the country, and brought with it the only major title for Espanyol in this sport. As coach of Real Madrid once again succeeded him in 1944 the finals, but this time his team failed with 18:33 to Laieta BC.

In 1947 he moved to the Spanish Federation, where he worked from 1947 to 1949 and 1952 as a coach, but may also be in the athletic line worked. In 1963 he started for the dissemination of mini - basketball in Spain use. It is a native of America, known there as Biddy Basketball, variant which is played with smaller, lighter balls and lower baskets and is particularly suitable for children. Anselmo López is considered one of the fathers of the Mini Basket in Spain and Europe.

From 1966 to 1971 he served as President of the Spanish Basketball Federation. For his achievements in the promotion and development of basketball, he was awarded in 1994 with the FIBA Order of Merit.

In addition, Anselmo López also worked from 1966 to 1971 as vice president and from 1971 to 1984 as general secretary for the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE ). He also led the Spanish squad at the Summer Olympics in 1968, 1972, 1976 and 1980 and at the Winter Games in 1972. Between 1980 and 1996 he held the position of Treasurer for the Association of National Olympic Committees, where he from 1980 to 1981 as Secretary-General acted. In addition, he was the Vice President in the service of the organizing committee of the Football World Cup 1982 in Spain.

On 14 December 2004 Anselmo López died at the age of 94 years. In 2007 he was admitted posthumously into the FIBA Hall of Fame.
