Antoinette Spaak

Antoinette M. Spaak (* June 27, 1928 in Etterbeek in Brussels) is a Belgian politician. She studied philosophy and literature at the Université Libre de Bruxelles.

Family

She is the daughter of former Belgian Prime Minister and NATO Secretary-General Paul -Henri Spaak. Her grandmother was the woman 's rights activist and first Belgian Senator Marie Spaak. Her grandfather, Paul -Emile Janson was Belgian prime minister.

Spaak lives in Brussels, is married and has two children.

Political career

She grew up in one of the leading political families in Belgium. After the death of her father, she took over his role in the Democratic Front of Francophones ( FDF) and became its party chairman from 1977 to 1982. You was the first woman to lead a political party in Belgium. She was a member of the European Parliament from 1977 to 1982 and again from 1994 to 1999. Between 1982 and 2001 she was a municipal councilor in Elsene.

She was the head of the French-speaking Community of Belgium from 1988 to 1992. In the 1990s she was with Louis Michel, the driving force behind the merger of the FDF with the Parti Réformateur Libéral (PRL ) and the Mouvement des citoyens pour le changement (MCC ) for Mouvement Réformateur ( MR).

Honorary Appointments

Since 1983, Spaak, Minister van State / Ministre d'Etat. This is in Belgium a title of honor, which is awarded by the King for life in special cases. The Minister van State are not members of the Council of Ministers. She is a board member of the " Fondation Spaak " and as part of the Equestrian Order - Grand Officer of the Order of the Belgian King Leopold II
