Anton de Waal

Anton de Waal, baptismal name " Anton Maria ", ( born May 5, 1837 in Emmerich, † February 23, 1917 in Rome, Campo Santo ± Teutonico ) was a German Catholic theologian, church historian, archaeologist Christian and scientific organizer.

Life

Born in Emmerich, the son of the merchant William de Waal and his wife Helene van Beeck born 1837 Anton de Waal graduated from the grammar school of his native city, and studied theology in Münster. There he received on 11 October 1862 by Bishop Johann Georg Müller ordained a priest and then worked as a teacher at the Collegium Augustinianum Gaesdonck. Here were the later bishops Hermann Jakob Dingelstad and Adolf Fritz, his colleagues, also a teacher.

On July 19, 1868 de Waal became chaplain at the German National Church of Santa Maria dell'Anima in Rome and received his PhD on February 19, 1869 Doctor of Divinity. In the summer and autumn of 1870, at the siege and conquest of Rome by Italian military, de Waal was also a voluntary chaplain of the Pontifical troops, especially, he supervised the many German soldiers among them.
