Anton Walbrook

Adolf Wilhelm Anton Wohlbrück ( born November 19, 1896 in Vienna, † August 9, 1967 in Garatshausen ) was an Austrian actor who called himself in exile in England Anton Walbrook.

Life

Wohlbrück was the son of circus clowns Adolf Ferdinand Wohlbrück (1864-1930) and grandson of actor and variety artist Adolf Wohlbrück ( 1826-1897 ). After attending a convent school in Vienna and the Gymnasium in Berlin, he took acting lessons at the school of Max Reinhardt. In World War I he got captured by the French, where he founded the diver captivity theater, and then continued his career at various theaters in Munich, Dresden and Berlin continued. He began occasionally in silent films to play along, but only with the sound film, he appeared regularly. He embodied the elegant, urbane gentleman, often on the side of Renate Müller ( Viktor and Viktoria, The English Marriage ). From 1933 he changed his appearance and appeared with Moustache.

Wohlbrück, not just half- Jew and homosexual, but also politically, a vehement opponent of the Nazi regime, emigrated 1936, France and Hollywood to England and worked there as Anton Walbrook - " Adolf " had at that time certainly given offense. He died on 9 August of that year to a heart attack after he collapsed end of March 1967 during a performance in Munich on stage.
