António Ginestal Machado

António Machado Ginestal ( May 3, 1874 in Almeida, † June 28, 1940 in Santarém ), was a Portuguese school professor, politician and prime minister (Presidente do Conselho de Cabinet Ministers ) during the First Republic.

Life

Study and career

After attending high school ( Ensino secundário ) of Guarda in 1892 he began training at the Naval Academy and at the same time a study of the literature. After graduation he received while in 1897 the admission as a secondary school teacher, but completed yet another first year in military service. In addition, he completed a degree in law at the University of Coimbra.

In 1898, he was then, after leaving the Navy for a secondary school teacher of history and geography at the High School of Angra do Heroismo in the Azores island of Terceira. In 1904 he then moved on as a professor of history and geography at the National Gymnasium ( Liceu Nacional) of Santarém.

Political career

His political career began in 1909 with the first elected president of the municipal council ( junta ) of Santarém. In the wake of turmoil before the founding of the First Republic on October 6, 1910, he was the following year, then commander of the revolutionary movement of Santarém.

1911 he was appointed government commissioner of the Railway Company ( Companhia dos Caminhos de Ferro Portugueses ).

Throughout his political career, which was mainly characterized by a moderate republicanism, he was initially a member of the founded by Brito Camacho in February 1912 Partido Union Ista, which renamed itself after the merger with the Partido Republicano Evolucionista in October 1919 in Partido Liberal Republicano. In 1914 he was a member of the board of the Partido Paulista Union and later the Partido Nacional of Republicano.

In 1919 he was elected deputy of the Parliament ( Assembleia da República ), where he represented the interests of the constituency Santarém to May 1926. On May 23, 1921, he was appointed by Prime Minister José Tomé de Barros Queirós minister of public instruction in his cabinet, which he then belonged to 30 August 1921. The Office of the Minister of Education, he had then also in the cabinet of António Joaquim Granjo until October 19, 1921 held.

On November 15, 1923, he was then in place of António Maria da Silva himself prime minister (Presidente do Conselho de Cabinet Minister ) of a minority government until December 14, 1923. At the same time he also took over the post of interior minister. However, real strong man of his reign was War Minister António Óscar de Fragoso Carmona, the later years of President of Portugal.

After the revolution of 28 May 1926, he retired to his resignation from the Parliament and the Executive Board of the Partido Nacional Republicano from political life and was back to 1931 worked as a professor at the National School of Santarém.

On April 2, 1987, the School of Santarém was " Escola Secundária Dr. Ginestal Machado " renamed after him.
