Antonio María Cascajares y Azara

Antonio María Cardinal Cascajares y Azara ( born March 2, 1834 in Calanda; † July 27, 1901 in Calahorra ) was a Spanish bishop.

Life

Antonio María Cascajares y Azara occurred in 1846 in the Spanish navy, and left it in 1857 as a captain, to study theology and canon law. In 1861 he was ordained a priest. He worked for the Church in Zaragoza, Toledo and Burgos.

Pope Leo XIII. appointed him on March 27, 1882 Titular Bishop of Dora and ordered him to the prelates of Ciudad Real. The Apostolic Nuncio in Spain, Angelo Bianchi, ordained him on June 4 of the same year the bishop; Co-consecrators were Victoriano Guisasola y Rodríguez, Bishop of Orihuela, and Ciriaco Sancha y Hervás, Bishop of Ávila. He was appointed on March 27, 1884 Bishop of Calahorra. On December 17, 1891 he was appointed by Pope Leo XIII. Archbishop of Valladolid.

Leo XIII. participated in the consistory of November 29, 1895 it was a cardinal priest with the titular church Sant'Eusebio in the College of Cardinals to. On 24 March 1898, he opted as Cardinal Priest of the titular church of Sant'Agostino. On April 18, 1901 he was appointed Archbishop of Saragossa, but he died on 27 July 1901 in Calahorra before the job could start. He is buried in his birthplace Calanda.
