António Mendes Belo

António Mendes I. Cardinal Bello ( born June 18, 1842 in Gouveia, Portugal, † August 5, 1929 in Lisbon ) was Archbishop and Patriarch of Lisbon.

Life

António Mendes Bello studied the subjects of Catholic theology and philosophy at the University of Coimbra and received on 10 June 1865, the sacrament of Holy Orders. With only 23 years he was Vicar General of the Diocese of Funchal and professor of theology at the Seminary of Pinhel. From 1874 to 1881 he was Vicar General of the Diocese of Pinhel, from 1881 the Diocese of Aveiro. In 1881 he was then Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Lisbon.

1884 he was appointed by Pope Leo XIII. first titular Archbishop of Mitylene and Auxiliary Bishop of Lisbon. He received his episcopal consecration on 27 April 1884, the then Patriarch of Lisbon, José Sebastião Neto. In the same year he was appointed Bishop of Faro.

1907 António Mendes Bello Patriarch of Lisbon. Pope Pius X appointed him in 1911 in pectore cardinal. The proclamation was made in 1914 and the recording as cardinal priest with the titular church of Santi Marcellino e Pietro in the College of Cardinals was on May 25, 1914. From 1911 to 1913 had António Mendes Bello leave his diocese, there were clashes between the Church and the State of Portugal. 1922 Cardinal Bello became a member of the Portuguese Academy of Sciences.

António Mendes Bello died on 5 August 1929 in Lisbon and was buried in the Church of São Vicente de Fora.
