Listen anykščiai? / I (Polish Onikszty, German Onikschten ) is a Lithuanian town and seat of Rajongemeinde same name. It lies at the confluence of the rivers šventoji and Anykšta. It is surrounded by rural, hilly landscape with 76 lakes.

The Rajongemeinde ( Anykščių rajono savivaldybė ) comprises the three cities anykščiai ( 11,620 inhabitants), Kavarskas ( population 678 ) and Troskunai ( 468 inhabitants), the 8 town ( miesteliai ) Andrioniškis, Debeikiai, Kurkliai, Skiemonys, Surdegis, Svėdasai ( 1002 inhabitants), and Traupis Viesintos, and 758 villages.

City

Archaeological finds indicate earliest traces of settlement since 9000 BC The first known mention of anykščiai dates of 22 July 1440th The city rights in addition to arms were granted on 17 January 1792. The coat of arms depicts St. Nepomuk on a river bridge between two hills.

There are more than 250 cultural monuments. Anykščiai is called the City of important Lithuanian writer, even the " Weimar Lithuania ". 2012 was the city's culture capital of Lithuania.

" Granary " of Antanas Baranauskas ( Antano Baranausko klėtelė )

Antanas Baranauskas was bishop, mathematician, poet, linguist and author of Psalms. In the " granary ", which served as a guest during his summer holidays, he wrote in his hymn to Lithuania 1858-1859 " grove of anykščiai ". The building is preserved in its original and can be visited.
