Archambaud VIII of Bourbon

Archambault VIII (* 1189, † 1242 ) from the family of the lords of Dampierre -sur- l'Aube was lord of Bourbon l'Archambault.

He was the eldest son of Guy II de Dampierre and Mahaut I de Bourbon, heiress of Bourbon.

By King Philip Augustus in 1215, he was appointed royal governor of Auvergne. This office had already occupied his father, after the subject had in 1213 the Count Guido II of Auvergne. In 1223 Archambault was also appointed to a constable of the Auvergne, so to him the local military leadership was entrusted. In 1230 he was forced to retire again after Count William X had received back his lands and Crown land was entrusted in the Auvergne ( Terre royale d' Auvergne ) a royal seneschal to manage these offices.

Archambault VIII married his first wife in 1205 Guigone de Forez, second wife Béatrice de Montlucon, which is attested in 1215.

He had four children, two from each marriage:

  • Archambault IX. († 1249 ) ∞ 1228 Yolande of Châtillon († 1254 ), Countess of Nevers, Auxerre and Tonnerre, daughter of Guido I. Count of Saint-Pol (House Châtillon )
  • Marguerite († April 12, 1256 in Provins ), 1253-56 Regent of Champagne and Navarre; ∞ 1232 Theobald IV († 1253 ), Count of Champagne, in 1234 as Theobald I, King of Navarre (House of Blois )
  • Marie ( probably * 1220 † 1274), ∞ 1240 John I, Count of Dreux, Count of Braine (House France Dreux )
  • Béatrice ( Agnès ) in 1281 attests; ∞ Béraud de Mercœur

Archambault VIII should not be confused with Archambault of Bourbon, his maternal grandfather and son of Archambault VII, who died in 1169 and for some years before his father, who is still attested in 1171, which is why it comes in the count here to irritation.
