Arctic Village is a census -designated place in Yukon - Koyukuk Census Area of Alaska. The village is situated on the Chandalar River, about 160 kilometers north of Fort Yukon.

History

The Neets'aii Gwich'in who until the 1950s. When hunting for game and fish they used seasonal storage bins and settlements such as Arctic Village, Christian, Venetie and Sheenjak and traded with the Inupiat of the coast of the Arctic Ocean. There is archaeological evidence of a settlement of the region by Arctic Village from the year 4500 BC

The emergence of firearms by European settlers and prospectors in the early 20th century resulted in the Gwich'in to a more settled life, as the need to follow the caribou herds in small groups, was no longer present. The first permanent residents of Arctic Village was Chief Christian in 1909.

1943, the Venetie Indian Reservation was established to ensure the use of the land for their own use. The first school was built in 1959. With the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act 1971 Venetie and Arctic Village about 7300 km ² of land from the reserve were awarded.

With the Arctic Village Traditional Council are available in Arctic Village, a nationally recognized community of indigenous people of Alaska.
