Aringay, La Union

Aringay is a town on the Gulf of Lingayen in the Philippine province of La Union. In the east it borders the province of Benguet.

Climate

The city in northern Luzon has a typical monsoon climate with a dry season from November to April and a rainy season from May to October.

Economy

The people of Aringay live mainly on rice, fruit, and tobacco. Few people live from tourism.

History

Aringay is an old place and was already known before the colonial period as Alingay or Alinguey. When the Spanish settlers arrived in Aringay the late 16th century, they found Pangasináns, who carried on with the Ilocanos and Ifugao with the trade. They also had to merchants from China, Japan and Southeast Asia contact. The municipality was finally a part of the Spanish colonies and the Augustinian missionaries, the population is Roman Catholic faith.

Aringay remained until April 18, 1854 a part of the province of Pangasinan. Then the northern areas of the province and the southern areas of Ilocos Sur was combined to give the new province of La Union was created. In the 18th and 19th centuries, more and more Ilocanos moved south and at the end of the 19th century lived mainly Ilocanos in Aringay.

In the city there have been during the four centuries of Spanish rule, Americans and Japanese uprisings. Bloody confrontations were set by revolutionaries such as Diego Silang and Gabriela Silang during Spanish occupation in transition. Later in the Philippine- American War followed uprisings by rebels and during the Second World War destroyed the Japanese rural barangays of Aringay.

A decisive battle took place on Aringay River when American troops were reflected the partisans of the Ilocano. From 1901 from the province of La Union was finally in the hands of the Americans.

The Japanese attacked Aringay in December 1941 and directed many Aringayenos during their retreat from 1945 to 1946 brutal way.
