Arne (Dorset)

Arne is a village and a Civil parish on the Isle of Purbeck peninsula in the county of Dorset in southern England.

Location

Arne is located about 7 km (4 miles ) east of Wareham, and southwest of the metropolitan Bournemouth and about 7 kilometers north of the village of Corfe Castle and the ruins of Corfe Castle. The village is located on the peninsula which protrudes into Arne Poole Harbour, opposite the town of Poole, and covers the entire territory between Corfe Castle and Wareham.

The municipality is part of the Purbeck Arne County. The municipality has a population of 1344 living in 612 apartments or houses, according to the 2001 Census.

The word comes from the Anglo- Arne Saxon " AERN " which means " abode ".

Next to the village and the peninsula of Arne, bourgeois municipality covers an important area west of Arne and southwest of Wareham, including the villages Ridge, Stoborough, Stoborough Green and Worgret and has an area of ​​24.83 square kilometers.

History

The village was first mentioned in 1285 Documentary. In the Doomsday Book 1086 Arne was not mentioned, but probably there was the village at the time already.

The church of Saint Nicholas of Myra is an ancient, small building, on the cusp of a major dike and is over 900 years old. The church is built of Purbeck stone and has space for 60 people. It is quite significant, regardless of the size. She only has a bell. The organ was built by Gray and Davidson in London. She was a gift from Louisa Countess of Eldon in 1812.

The school was founded in 1832, but was closed again in 1922.

In addition to some small farms prospered, the whole area from the profit and export of Purbeck Ball Clay. A majority were transported on the river Frome, part by rail on narrow gauge railways to Poole harbor. Purbeck Ball Clay was also processed in Arne and dried. The ball clay industry exists today still to Furzebrook and the sound is now transported by truck or standard gauge trains.

Arne is probably best known by the Arne RSPB Reserve ( Royal Society for the Protection of Birds ). The reserve was opened in 1966. The area is directly adjacent to the village itself. It is within the " Dorset AONB " (Area of ​​Outstanding Natural Beauty ).
