Arthur O'Hara Wood

Arthur O'Hara Wood ( * 1890 in Melbourne, Australia, † October 6, 1918 in Saint- Quentin, France) was an Australian tennis player.

Arthur O'Hara Wood was the elder of two tennis -playing brothers who grew up in a sports- loving family. His younger brother is Pat O'Hara Wood ( 1891-1961 ). Her father John James O'Hara Wood was a lawyer and the brothers encouraged to play tennis. Both were good players and won several titles at the Australian Tennis Championships. In 1914 he won the Australian Tennis Championships. In the final he defeated his compatriot Gerald Patterson in three sets ( 6-4, 6-3, 5:7, 6:1). In the doubles competition, he lost this year with his partner Rodney Heath against Ashley Campbell and Gerald Patterson 7:5, 3:6, 6:3, 6:3. During the First World War, Arthur served in the Royal Air Force in Europe. It was early October 1918 shot down Saint- Quentin in France and died. His brother Pat returned to his service in the Australian army associations in Europe back to Australia and was able to continue his successful tennis career.
