Artur Azevedo

Artur Azevedo, actually Artur Nabantino Gonçalves de Azevedo (* July 7, 1855 in São Luís, Maranhão, † October 22, 1908 in Rio de Janeiro) was a Brazilian journalist and writer.

Life

Azevedo was born into a wealthy family: his father was the diplomat David Gonçalves de Azevedo, his Mutte Emília Amália de Magalhaes Pinto came from one of the leading family of the country. The writer Aluísio Azevedo was his younger brother.

After completing his schooling Azevedo got a job at the provincial administration in his state. But after a short time he lost it again, because he had ridiculed with caricatures the government. He went to Rio de Janeiro and earned his living in the early years as a clerk in the Ministry of Agriculture.

At the same time he began while working as a journalist; inter alia, for " A Estaçao " and " Novidades ". This Azevedo made ​​the acquaintance with Olavo Bilac, Henrique Coelho Neto Maximiano, Alcindo Guanabara, Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis, Moreia Sampio among others

Together with his brother Aluísio he was one of the 40 founding members of the Academia Brasileira de Letras, had held from 1897 to Cadeira 29.

On October 22, 1908 Artur Azevedo died at the age of 53 years in Rio de Janeiro and found his final resting place.
