Artur Mas i Gavarró

Artur Mas i Gavarró (born 31 January 1956 in Barcelona ) is a Spanish politician and General Secretary of the Catalan party Convergència Democràtica de Catalunya ( CDC ), a member of the party alliance Convergència i Unio ( CiU ). He was since May 27, 2004 Leader of the Opposition in the Catalan Parliament, until he was elected on 23 December 2010 on the 129th President of the Generalitat.

Life

Mas grew up as the oldest of four children of a middle class family, his mother comes from a family of textile industry, his father from a family of metal industry. He attended the Lycée Français and then studied business administration and economics. At the age of 26, he joined the Convergència i Unio.

Artur Mas sat from 1987 to 1995 in the City Council of Barcelona and is a member of the Catalan Parliament since 1995. From 2001 to 2003 he held the newly created post of Conseller s Cap (, Chief Minister '), the function of which roughly corresponded to that of a Prime Minister.

Mas came in the elections to the regional parliament in the years 2003 and 2006 as a top candidate of the CiU, which presented the largest party in parliament after two elections. The government was formed, however, in both cases by a left-wing coalition of the PSC, ICV and Esquerra Republicana.

In the elections of November 28, 2010 won the CiU, Artur Mas again as the leading candidate, 62 of the 135 seats. On 23 December, he was subsequently elected the abstention of the 28 members of the PSC with all the voices of the CiU to the 129th President of the Generalitat .. He is facing a minority government of the CiU.

On September 25, 2012 Mas announced new elections for November 25, 2012, two years before the scheduled election date modern. The CiU was indeed the strongest force again, but fell far short of their own expectations and even recorded the worst result in regional elections since 1984.

December 21, 2012 Mas was elected with the votes of the CiU and the ERC again as President of the Generalitat.
