After the election

As a result, the bourgeois parties, in particular the CiU and to a lesser extent, the PPC were able to gain votes. To this end, may have also helped that there was the Spanish government in Madrid under the Socialist Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, due to the severe economic crisis simmering in a low popularity. The reigning since 2003 in Catalonia 3 - party coalition of PSC, ERC and ICV EUiA under the leadership of the Socialist José Montilla suffered major losses and received 48 instead of 70 seats in parliament. Montilla then declared his resignation from the office of the President of the Generalitat. On 23 December, the CiU - Chairman Artur Mas was elected with 62 votes of the CiU at 28 abstentions, the PSC president of the Catalan regional government. The CiU had indeed can grow significantly votes, but missed with 62 of 135 seats, the absolute majority, so that the new CiU -led government can only rely on a minority in the Catalan Parliament.
