Artus Quellinus the Elder

Arthur Quellinus ( born August 30, 1609 Antwerp, † February 23, 1668 in Antwerp ) was a Flemish sculptor. He is usually referred to in the literature as Arthur Quellinus the Elder.

Arthur Quellinus was the son and pupil of the sculptor Erasmus Quellinus I. from the family of artists Quellinus, and brother of Erasmus Quellinus II and Hubertus Quellinus. It was formed from the Flemish sculptor François Duquesnoy in Rome. In 1640 he was inducted into the Guild of St. Luke of Antwerp. After 1648 he was appointed to Amsterdam to decorate the local town hall, the Paleis op de Dam with sculptures. In the two gables, he brought in two -figured, the naval power of Amsterdam glorifying groups. Inside, he said decorative works, including the relief of Diana and a grieving caryatid. Quellinus moved into the more picturesque expressions of the Baroque style.

In 1660, he put together the works of art for the Dutch Gift to Charles II, together with Gerrit van Uylenburgh.

His son Arthur Quellinus II was also a sculptor.
