In the Samtgemeinde aces from the Lower Saxony Wolfenbüttel district seven communities have joined together to do their administrative business. Thus, the integrated municipality has 9,952 inhabitants (as of 1 November 2007).

On 5 October 2011, a future contract with the state of Lower Saxony was closed, which provides for a merger with Samtgemeinde Schoeppenstedt 1 January 2015. As part of this future contract, the country takes over 75 percent of the cash advances of two merging joint communities.
