Atavistic Records

Atavistic Records is an American rock and jazz label.

The label Atavistic Records, which is based in Chicago, was known above all for his publication in the field of No Wave and free jazz. On the label released recordings, inter alia, of Glenn Branca, Nels Cline, Lydia Lunch, Joe McPhee, Ken Vandermark, Pinetop Seven, Swans, Elliott Sharp, Larry Ochs, Mars, Davey Williams, Brian Harnetty and Poem Rocket. The company was founded in 1985 in Columbus ( Ohio) by Kurt Kellison as a video label that live VHS recordings of bands like Live Skull and The Flaming Lips produced. 1988 Kellison moved the label to Chicago.

In edited by John Corbett Atavistic series Unheard Music Series appear re-releases of out-of improvisation and free jazz recordings, such as numerous albums by Peter Brötzmann, who had appeared previously only self-published, or first editions of important festivals and radio productions, but also re-releases of no longer producing labels Free Music Production, as Brötzmann's Machine Gun album.
