Larry Ochs (musician)

Lawrence " Larry " Ochs ( May 3, 1949 in New York City ) is an American jazz saxophonist ( tenor and sopranino saxophone) and composer.

Life and work

Larry Ochs first learned trumpet, but soon moved to tenor and sopranino saxophone. In 1978, he worked as a record producer and founded his own label, Metalanguage Records. He also co-founded the saxophone lineup Rova Saxophone Quartet, and worked in Glenn Spearman Double Trio. As a composer, he has acted for numerous commissioned works, as for the play Goya 's LA by Leslie Scalapino (1994) and for the documentary film Letters Not About Love (1998) by his sister Jacki Ochs. He also played in 1986 in trio formation Room ( with pianist Chris Brown and drummer William Winant ) and the What We Live ensemble with bassist Lisle Ellis and drummer Donald Robinson. Ochs took on several albums under his own name, including on the Black Saint label, and has participated in recordings of Andrea Centazzo, Scott Fields, Ben Goldberg and John Lindberg.
