Athol is a small town in the Southland district in the Southland region of the South Island of New Zealand. It lies about 55 km south of Queenstown halfway between Lumsden and Kingston on State Highway 6 Nearest places on Highway are Parawa in the southwest and Nokomai in the Northeast. The Mataura River flows through the town.

The name comes from either Harry Athol, owner of the first pubs of the place or of Athol in Scotland Perthshire, from an early land owner in the area, WB Rogers, came from.

Athol is located about 329 meters above the sea. About 70 people live in the village and 7 km radius.
