Atyrau

Atyrau ( Kazakh / Russian Атырау / Atıraw / ɑtɪɾaw /; former Soviet Гурьев, Gurjev ) is a port city in Kazakhstan. It is the capital of the eponymous region Atyrau.

Geography

The city is located in the northwestern part of Kazakhstan on the Ural River, 45 km from the northern shore of the Caspian Sea. Your geographic coordinates are 47.12 ° N and 51.88 ° E.

History

Atyrau was founded by the brothers Gurjev, Russian merchants, in 1640. The settlement was called to 1708 Jaizk ( Nizhny Jaizk ). Later it was named after its founders Gurjev until it received its present name after the independence of Kazakhstan.
